Atlas-F

History
The Atlas-F missile system was built in 1960, and after a short operational period, was decommissioned in 1965. These sites were the first of the "super hardened" missile silos, built to withstand a 200 pound per square inch blast. Floorplans and Images (Click here).

General Layout
These sites consist of several general elements:

Command Building
Two stories 40 feet in diamter.
Access is by stairs and through two blast-proof doors.
Approximately 2363 square feet of floorspace not including stairway or vestibule. Due to insulation of the earth, heating and cooling needs are minimal.

Missile Silo
The missile silo is a huge structure 50 feet in diameter and approximately 185 feet deep. Access is from a 40 foot tunnel leading from the command building stairway Missile silo has an approximate volume of 363,062 cubic feet.
A deck built in the silo would have 1962 square feet of floorspace. Multiple levels could be built in the silo.

Land
Land sizes with the Atlas-F series vary greatly, due to post-government division. The minimum typical acreage is 5 acres, although some are still deeded with the original 19-21 acres the government used. More land is often available from adjacent landowners. Originally, the inner 5 acres of these sites were surrounded by a barbed wire topped chain link security fence. This fence remains on some sites. There are two concrete pads at each site, each about 40 feet by 100 feet.

Possible Uses
Homesite, either in underground structure or above ground additions. Ultra secure climate-controlled storage, personal or industrial. Industrial liquid storage, over 2.5 million gallon capacity. Twentieth Century Castles is working on several industrial uses for the F series which cannot be divulged at this time.

Properties
